IÑIGO

ORTUBIA

alboka

I was born in the Basque Country, a northern region of Spain. Traditional instruments are still quite widely played in special occasions. One among many is the Alboka. It is composed of two horns and a pair of flutes. The sound is similar to the one made by bagpipes. I wanted to replicate one, so I carved I piece of oak wood, crafted a pair of flutes and cut another pair of horns. Work is still on progress.

An oak wood piece is carved into the frame of the instrument. This will hold the pipes in place. The pipes are made from cane wood. These have to be shaped so they produce the right tones when blowing.

A pair of cow horns have to be carved. The smaller one is used as the mouthpiece of the instrument. The sound will leave from the bigger one.

This picture shows a finished alboka.
